DUTIES BY DESTINATION

Three destinations. Three clear terms.

Complimentary shipping covers the transportation charge. Outside the U.S., it does not include import taxes, customs duties, or carrier fees that may be assessed locally.

United States · DDP

Duties paid by Japan Book Trading.

Every order shipped to a U.S. delivery address is Delivered Duty Paid, regardless of order value.

  • Applicable import duties and tariffs are arranged through the shipping service.
  • No import duty should be due from the buyer on delivery.
  • State or local sales tax, when applicable, is separate and shown at checkout.
  • Customs or the carrier may still request information needed for clearance.

No order-value threshold.

European Union

Local import charges may be collected.

Japan Book Trading does not currently collect EU import VAT or customs duty at checkout.

  • Import VAT and carrier clearance fees may be collected from the recipient. Customs-duty handling depends on the import declaration and carrier process.
  • VAT rates and product classifications vary by EU member state.
  • For low-value consignments up to €150, the EU temporary €3 duty is levied per distinct tariff category from July 1, 2026; collection is handled through the declarant or carrier process.
  • For consignments over €150, normal customs tariffs may apply.

Charges are determined during import clearance.

Other countries

Destination-country rules apply.

This section covers every delivery address outside the U.S. and EU, including the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, Australia, and destinations across Asia and the rest of the world.

  • Japan Book Trading does not collect local import taxes or customs duties at checkout.
  • The recipient may be asked to pay import tax, customs duty, brokerage, or carrier handling fees.
  • Thresholds and rates vary by country, customs value, origin, and product classification.
  • Local customs or the carrier determines the final amount.

Check your destination customs authority for local rules.

EU low-value duty: the temporary €3 customs duty is applied per distinct tariff category in a qualifying consignment, not simply once per parcel. It is scheduled to operate from July 1, 2026 until July 1, 2028.

Before your order travels.

Is shipping free worldwide?

Yes. Complimentary tracked shipping is included for every destination. Import taxes, customs duties, and carrier fees assessed outside the U.S. are separate.

Is every U.S. order DDP?

Yes. All orders shipped to a U.S. delivery address are DDP regardless of order value, so no import duty should be due from the buyer on delivery.

Who pays import charges in the EU?

Japan Book Trading does not collect EU import VAT or customs charges at checkout. Import VAT and carrier clearance fees may be collected from the recipient; customs-duty handling depends on the import declaration and carrier process.

What happens in countries outside the U.S. and EU?

Local rules apply. If import tax, customs duty, brokerage, or a carrier fee is assessed, it is normally collected from the recipient before or at delivery.

Which carriers do you use?

FedEx or Japan Post. We select the service according to the destination, parcel size, item type, and current availability.

Can you declare a lower value?

No. Customs documents must show an accurate description and transaction value.
